National Conker Week – October 4th–11th 2020

One thing we have discovered is that conkers can only be played when there are conkers about. In the UK, that is typically from late September until late October, which is why all the serious conker competitions take place in early to mid-October. The Conker Cup has moved its tournament to the first Sunday of October, to act as a feeder competition for the biggest event of all: the World Conker Championships, which is always held on the second Sunday of October.

Conker Cup is more than a regional conker competition. We are here to champion the great game of conkers, and nut sports in general. We want everyone out swinging their nuts. Conkers is not just a children’s game: we know plenty of adults who enjoy the adrenaline-fuelled rush of threading a conker onto a knotted shoelace and going into battle with an opponent. None’ers become one’ers, one’ers become five’ers and even 25’ers, until the champion of the contest is crowned.

To raise awareness and get more people involved in the great game of conkers, Conker Cup is launching a National Conker Week campaign, held in the first full week of October. The week starts with the Conker Cup tournament on Sunday 4th October and culminates in the World Conker Championships on Sunday 11th October, with, we hope, plenty of local tournaments organised by you in between.

Playing conkers is not only about the game itself; it is a complete experience, from collecting the conkers after the Great Nut Drop on an autumn day, to finding inventive uses for them afterwards. Did you know that smashed conkers can be used to make a natural washing detergent?

At Conker Cup, we encourage our members to bring a nut sack and join us collecting conkers for the tournament. On the day of the Conker Cup there is music and picnics as well as the competition, so why not make a day of it? Or, indeed, a week: National Conker Week.

We recognise that we are somewhat obsessive about conkers. We believe the game should be played all year round; unfortunately, nature does not agree. Regardless, we need your help to promote National Conker Week. Please tell your friends about it and get in touch with your plans. We will ask our friends at Chestnut Chat to do an episode on some of the ideas you come up with.

We strive to keep conkers at the forefront of people’s minds, and to share news, interviews and conker scoops with you all. Together we will become better and stronger, and lift the game of conkers to new heights. Release your inner child and get involved.
